Annual Notice and Assessment Caution

Subsequent Letters of Intent to homeschool and annual assessment results are due by September 1. The Department of Education does not mail out reminders. Annual assessment results must be included in the same packet with the Subsequent Letter of Intent. Mail copies to both the DOE and your local superintendent. Please click here (http://www.homeschoolersofmaine.org/Complying_easy.htm) to review the process. To see the Law Summary Page click here.

If you need assistance with assessment options, please feel free to contact the HOME office at 763-2880.

From HSLDA:

This year you must use extra caution if you plan to use a form on the Maine Department of Education's website, or one your local school system  sent you.

The Department of Education's website http://www.state.me.us/education/hs/index.html lists two "subsequent year letter" forms. One is correct and one contains errors.

The Department's old one--the one labeled for 2008-2009--is actually correct.  If you choose to use it, simply make two changes. Cross out "2008-09" and pencil in "2009-10".  Cross out "2007-08" in both places it occurs and pencil in "2008-09".

The Department's new one--the one labeled for 2009-10--unfortunately is incorrect. It calls for all the information that is necessary for an INITIAL notice of intent.  The subsequent year letter, on the other hand, requires only name, address, and the names of the children whom you intend to continue homeschooling.

If your school system sent you a blank subsequent year letter form, they probably sent you this incorrect form.  We have confirmed, for example, that MSAD 40 sent the form containing errors to families. We have brought this to the attention of the Department, but have not received a response.

A better plan is simply to use the subsequent year letter form that is available to you at no cost as a member of HSLDA on the members only section of our website, http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5465 You can be confident it contains no errors.

Remember to keep copies of each item until the homeschool program concludes, as the law requires.

I hope this an excellent year for you and your family. Thank you for being part of HSLDA and supporting the mission of advancing homeschooling.

Sincerely,

Scott Woodruff

HSLDA Staff Attorney
