Who We Are
Homeschoolers of Maine is a volunteer based ministry founded in 1990 by Ed and Kathy Green. The mission of this ministry is to support homeschooling families in their God-given and constitutional right and responsibility to oversee the education of their children. Before founding HOME’s ministry, the Greens had been homeschooling their four daughters, as well as providing support and guidance to other homeschoolers throughout the state for many years. With those years of experience in homeschool leadership, they felt the time was right for Maine to have a statewide group which had a Godly foundation. This foundation continues to provide the principles that guide the leaders of HOME today. The Christian principles on which HOME rests allow HOME leaders to minister effectively to all homeschooling families in our state.
HOME is funded by annual conventions, subscriptions to our newsletter, Founding Family supporters, various fundraisers, etc. We depend upon the generosity of individual homeschooling families to finance the ministry of HOME. Our counseling and most other outreaches are free to all homeschoolers.
HOME holds an annual convention each spring. These conventions have grown larger each year. The 2011 convention drew nearly 800 attendees! Our three day conventions include nationally known speakers, workshops, homeschool vendors, a used curriculum clearance sale, and most importantly, the meeting of like minds!
Our means of communicating with homeschoolers throughout the state includes the HOME Digest, our website, email updates, facebook and twitter. HOME Email Updates are sent to anyone who desires to receive them. (If you are interested in receiving updates, please fill out the HOME Email Update request form.) HOME Email Updates include the latest homeschool happenings in Maine and the nation.
The Greens have run the HOME office from their home since the beginning of the organization. A number of years ago, our office became more "official" with it's own space. The Green's graciously gave up their garage and converted it into a place where homeschoolers can review hundreds of homeschooling books and curricula, attend workshops, come for counseling, etc. The Greens spend many hours each day taking care of the needs of homeschoolers. They enjoy meeting with new homeschoolers to discuss getting started, recommend curricula, or just support a person who needs some expertise. HOME holds workshops, regularly, at the office and hosts a "mom's retreat" during the fall. The Greens often pack up the entire bookstore and travel the state to provide workshops at support group gatherings.
HOME works closely with Home School Legal Defense Association, located in Virginia, when confronted with legal and legislative issues. HOME supports and relies upon NHERI and Dr. Brian Ray for homeschooling research and statistics that are used to inform Maine's homeschoolers, the media and, most importantly, the legislature during legislative concerns. HOME is very blessed by the services of Kathi Kearney, HOME board member and Maine certified teacher who founded the Hollingworth Center for Highly Gifted Children. Kathi scans all of Maine's upcoming legislative bills for any that would restrict our homeschooling freedoms. She presents workshops, provides portfolio reviews, gives the board of directors guidance and experience, and much more. HOME sends it’s President and, if financially able, other members of the Board to the national leadership conventions held by HSLDA for training and support. HOME is indebted to these organizations and individuals that the Lord has provided as resources to us. We could not provide quality service to Maine's homeschoolers without the wisdom and guidance of these support systems to Homeschoolers of Maine.
In addition, HOME's Board of Directors help in some of the daily tasks of the organization such as planning for and working at the conventions, publishing the newsletter, maintaining the website, etc. We are also blessed to have the support of our Regional Representatives, Support Group Leaders, and volunteers who help in ministering to Maine homeschoolers. Our work could never be completed without the help of these hardworking and dedicated people.
